Beyond Repair

A poem by Olivia Atkins

They gave in

Lost belief in me

And made me doubt myself

When I was voiceless

Career unsteady

And alone.

But I’ll show them –

Rising from the rubble

I surge

Heart protected

Yet clear that I do not require

Depth from our meetings.

An external layer coats our friendship

The inner ring impenetrable

The damage has been done

Trust cannot be regained

I am cautious.

And my heart won’t hang on the line anymore

The wind and the rain cannot touch it
